Making Service Personal Weekly Reflection
“If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs.” – Deuteronomy 15:7-8 –
Do you live to give or do you live to get? Most people in our society live to get. They want to get attention, approval, or admiration. They live a very me-centered life. They are so busy thinking about themselves that they don’t have time to think about anyone else.
I have found that the best medicine for falling into the trap of a me-centered life is simply going out and serving those in need. In the beginning of this year my wife and I lead a mission trip to an AIDS camp in a very poor area in the Bahamas. Many of the residents were very sick, some were unable to leave there bed, their food and water was very poor in quality. A lot of their families had rejected them and no longer visit or want anything to do with them. I encountered Christ in the residents I was serving that week. It was amazing to allow myself to be used by Christ to simply help provide a place to live and to feed and most important to be someone they could hug and talk with and to love each other as God created us to do with each other.
Jesus lived His life to give. He encourages us to give our lives away in the same way that He did. You can choose to be either a giver or a getter. Look for opportunities to give love, compassion, money, or kindness. Live to give your life away and serve others.
Lord I refuse to live to get. I choose to live my life to give it away so I can be touched by others. Help me to be generous with my time, talent, and money.
